What is Equity Resiliency?

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) was created after the 2001 California energy crisis as a peak-load reduction program—it offered incentives for renewable and waste heat capture technologies, non-renewable conventional combined heat and power (CHP) technologies, and emerging technologies.

The equity resiliency program was refreshed in 2020 as a response to the wildfires taking place along the west coast and includes an emphasis on “providing resiliency for vulnerable Californians in vulnerable locations”. 80% of the SGIP budget is set aside for energy storage purposes for equity resiliency—an additional $513 million in funding. The incentive level is set at $1,000/kWh—which is enough to “fully or nearly fully subsidize the installation of a storage system.”

Am I eligible for equity resiliency?

According to the full report, the equity resiliency program provides incentives for “low-income, vulnerable customers (and critical facilities) in high-risk fire threat districts or those who have been affected by the PSPS blackouts (public safety power shutoffs) across the state.”

If you live in a high-risk fire threat district OR you have experienced 2+ PSPS events and meet any of these other requirements, you may be eligible for equity resiliency:

  • Eligible for the equity budget
  • Eligible for the medical baseline
  • Have a serious illness or condition that could become threatened if disconnected

Am I in a high-risk fire threat district?

Find your area in the California Public Utilities Commission’s online tool to figure out if you live in a tier 2 or 3 high fire-threat district.

How do I get the SGIP rebate?

SGIP is an open application process, but the number of rebates available is limited by the budget. HES Solar can help you apply for the SGIP and complete the installation and monitoring of your solar panel or battery storage system.
