How to Live Off the Grid

Have you ever dreamed of becoming completely energy independent? You can accomplish such a seemingly impossible feat by harnessing solar energy.

What is solar energy?

Solar energy is energy derived from the sun. It is the same energy that warms the earth and provides its light. Solar energy is an inexhaustible source of energy that you can tap into. Read Solar FAQs here!

Types of Solar Systems

There are two basic types of solar systems: active and passive.

Passive solar energy can be harnessed by designing structures that take advantage of the sun's heat during the cold winter months but provide a cooling effect during the hot summer months.

Active solar systems use solar panels to capture sunlight and convert it directly into electricity. Active solar systems can be used to supply hot water, heat a swimming pool, or provide the electrical needs of an entire household.

Living off the Grid

To live off the grid, though, you will need a way to store the electrical energy that your solar panels generate in times of inadequate sunlight. The standard way to do that is with batteries.

Total Solar Systems

To live totally off the grid, you will need a complete solar energy system. In addition to the previously mentioned solar panels and batteries, you will need an inverter, control system, and associated wiring.

Bottom line: Unless you are an avid DIY person, you will need professional help installing your solar system. Your system will need to be sized correctly, and you will need help procuring the necessary components and combining the individual pieces into a cohesive solar energy system that will allow you to live off the grid.
